Going green the easy way!

We all feel like we really want to do something about the earth, the pollution, the global warming situation, deforestation and such. So did I.

I just kept waiting for an opportunity to volunteer or join a volunteer club or an organization, or maybe to collaborate with some friends and start recycling projects or join a tree plantation drive among other things.

But that never happened, and just sitting and waiting or reading eco friendly blogs and pollution stats was not helping either.

Then I stumbled upon this great movement – a revolution which took the internet up by a storm – “the zero waste movement”.

It definitely caught my attention, and I felt so silly at the stark simplicity of it. It was so damn easy to be a green person – to be a less burden on this earth. The best part – you didn’t need any collaboration or travel anywhere to do it. It begins with YOU and right from your home.

As per a 2013 report from the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), the total garbage generation in 2013 was 1.84 billiontonnes per year around the world. The countries creating the highest amounts of waste were China, followed by the United States and India.

Well, being in India has its perks as well as pitfalls.

Perks – because of some of our culturally ingrained habits and being economically backward (sounds like a pitfall, but is a blessing in disguise) as it led us to get some “jugaad” in our lives to save money. E.g. Using old clothes for cleaning purposes. The paper napkin was recently introduced due to rapid westernization and so-called sophistication. Maximum kitchens in India are still paperless kitchens.

Pitfalls – We do not have a proper garbage disposal system across the country, neither do we have the capital to do so.

Will be writing a separate article on the perks and pitfalls of being in India for the zero waste movement in the coming days. Stay tuned.

So coming back to the point, it started when I took a new year’s resolution to just stop using plastic and reduce the waste I generate which will go into the landfills. I am consciously making efforts while at a shop or while at home to generate lesser and lesser waste. Follow my blog to know how.

It requires some practice and diligence to reach the but is definitely not difficult to attain.

Till then,

Vande Mataram.
