Making sprouts in 3 easy steps
I recently saw quite a few zero-wasters and make-at-home-mom’s struggling to make sprouts at home and using some rather tricky and time-consuming methods – up to 48 hours or so – which is quite too much time to spend on something which is as simple as sprouts. It still requires 12 to 16 hours to get them ready but does not require any attention at all. So, I thought I will write this post for all the zero-wasters and nutrition lovers or vegans out there to help them in their journey.
This is by far the easiest and effective way to make sprouts at home. This method is used widely across almost all households in India for ages.
Remember the 3 steps : Soak, Strain & Bundle-up!
You will need:
- Beans of your choice which you would like to sprout. (I used Green Moong beans) Preferably GMO-free.
- A container with a lid
- A clean handkerchief / muslin cloth
Follow through the steps below:
STEP 1 : SOAK
Take a container of your choice (I like to use ceramic) which has a lid or you can simply cover with a plate. Take the desired amount of beans in the container. The volume of the beans will grow in double when they sprout – so if you want 2 cups of sprouts, take 1 cup of beans.
Pour drinking water over it – enough to cover them an inch deep. Cover with a lid and leave it overnight or up to 8 hrs.
STEP 2 : STRAIN & RINSE
In the morning, once they swell up or double up in size, strain and rinse them using a colander and then place them over a muslin cloth or a clean handkerchief.
STEP 3: BUNDLE UP
Tie it up in a bundle and cover with a lid or store in a warm or damp place and after 8 hours, Voila! They will be ready to use!
P.S. You can skip the lid in this step if you have a humid climate in your city. Keep them tied up longer for longer tails.
